We are excited to share with you our response to the physical distancing measures required of this time.

Now, in addition to in-real-life social cinema experiences, Hoovie Hosts can build community through virtual film screenings.

Virtual Hoovie is #humanAF

Virtual Hoovie enables hosts and guests to watch and discuss films face-to-face, human-to-human, weaving together synchronized streaming with video conferencing.

We’ve designed the experience to mimic the magic of Hoovie’s offline events, where the film is viewed together and book-ended by conversation. And just as with IRL Hoovie, ticket sales send real money into indie filmmakers’ pockets.

Here’s how Virtual Hoovie works

Upon buying a ticket, you’ll receive access to the event page where you’ll find an “Opening Welcome” button, the film player and a “Post-Film Conversation” button, along with instructions to download Zoom’s free app (if you haven’t already).

Click on the Opening Welcome button and a Zoom window opens, where the host/hosts introduce themselves and the film, then instruct guests to close Zoom and settle in when the film is about to begin.

The film will start playing for everyone at the advertised time – just like in a movie theatre.

After, click the Post-Film Conversation button to gather with new and old friends for conversation and mingling.

Depending on the size of the group, the host may use Zoom’s Break-Out Room feature to create more intimacy and seed small group discussion with conversation prompts provided by Hoovie.

A new medium for hospitality and community building

We’re excited to see the creative ways Hoovie Hosts activate this new medium for hospitality and community building.

We’ll be posting ideas and advice from our hosts on our blog so tune in if you’re seeking inspiration. And reach out if you’d like to contribute!

We feel such immense gratitude to be able to support folks to build community and spark opportunities for human connection, while ensuring filmmakers can access income during these uncertain, precarious times.

On that note, when hosting your next Virtual Hoovie, you may decide to contribute your cut of the ticket proceeds (50% of each ticket sold) to Hoovie’s new Indie Film Initiative. When you do, we’ll double the film rights holder’s ticket revenue (60% instead of 30%) and invest the rest into acquiring new films for Hoovie’s catalog.

Ready to host your first Virtual Hoovie?

The first step is to select your film, then click “Host a Screening” and follow the prompts. This is going to be fun!
