So by now, you’ve probably looked through the Hoovie catalog and maybe you’re saying to yourself: omg I saw this film do the festival circuit and I missed it but Hoovie has it?! Here is a rundown of Hoovie’s approach to hand-picking the films we think you should be watching and talking about!

So to be considered Hoovie-worthy, a film has to fulfill these 3 requirements:

  1. The film must be conversation-sparking. Hoovie selects films that inspire folks to hang out, unwind and converse about after.
  2. The film must be timely or timeless. Hoovie selects titles that are relevant to what is happening in the zeitgeist. For example: Human Nature explores the origin story of CRISPR technology (which could pioneer a vaccine for COVID-19 in the near future).
  3. The film must have done a festival circuit of some kind. Here’s the thing: It’s NOT hard to get into festivals. It IS hard to get into really good ones. So if a film didn’t get into many festivals that’s saying something – aka, they’ve been rejected a ton, we may think twice about adding it to the catalog. On the contrary, films that got into top festivals out-competed against hundreds, if not thousands of films.

That aside, here’s an overview of festivals Hoovie pays attention to:

Sundance, Cannes, Berlin International (aka Berlinale),Venice International Film FestivalToronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as well as Telluride, New York International and Rotterdam.

For International cinema, Hoovie looks at festivals like Busan International and Hong Kong International where great films often come from, most notably Asian films.

For art-house films, we take notice of films at Locarno International (an overall solid festival).

We also pay attention to TribecaSXSWMelbourne International (the top fest “down under”), IDFA (the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam), Hot DocsTrue/False, Full Frame, AFI Docs (formerly SilverDocs) and Visions du Reel.
